Charles WALCH was a French painter, draughtsman, engraver and sculptor, born in Thann (Haut-Rhin) in 1896 and died in Paris in 1948.
Starting out as a draughtsman on fabrics, he enrolled at the Arts Décoratifs de Paris in 1916 on a scholarship, and went on to have a studio in the city where he remained for the rest of his life.
His very personal style makes colors sing, with many fantasies. He was noticed in 1934 by art critic Georges Besson, who supported him. Awards and fame followed from 1937 onwards. He became friends with painters such as Georges Rouault, François Desnoyer, Léon Lehmann, Jean Bazaine and Marcel Gromaire.
After the war, he created a flamboyant rooster for the 1944 Salon d'Automne poster.
