André DERAIN was a French painter, sculptor, engraver, draughtsman, illustrator and writer born in 1880 in Chatou (Yvelines) and died in 1954 in Garches (Seine-et-Oise).
He is hailed as one of the founders around 1905 of the Fauvism alongside Matisse, Vlaminck and Braque, with whom he had close ties. He then moved on to Cubism and, from 1918 onwards, moved towards realism in the renewed classicism in which he expressed his taste for theater and letters, making him a major figure of the interwar period.
His pupils included Balthus and Raymond Veysset.
The Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris devoted a major exhibition to him in 2017.
His work can be found in a considerable number of museums around the world and in France.
