François MORELLET was a painter, engraver and sculptor born in Cholet in 1926 and died in the same town in 2016.
Major player ingeometric and minimalist abstraction of the second half of the 20th century, it is marked first and foremost by the example of Mondrian, who relied on a very stripped-down language of simple shapes (lines, squares, triangles) and limited colors.
He arranges forms according to predetermined orders in which feeling is absent, playing with mathematics or the laws of chance. In particular, he creates Répartitions aléatoires or Trames of superimposed, fragmented or juxtaposed black lines.
Precursor of thecinetic art in the 60s, he then evolved in the 70s towards an art form in which he was interested in the architectural integration of his works, playing with their boundaries.
Internationally renowned, François Morellet has taken part in numerous exhibitions. He has received major public commissions and is present in many museums in France and abroad, notably at the Louvre, where he is one of the very few contemporary artists to have created a work in the Richelieu wing in 2010, l’Esprit d’escalier.
