SOULAGES Pierre

Pierre SOULAGES was a French painter, engraver and decorator, born in 1919 in Rodez (Aveyron) and died aged 102 in 2022 in Nimes (Gard).

Important figure in theAbstract Art since the late 1940s, he is best known worldwide for his « Brou de noix » and his  « Outrenoir » in which he plays with the thickness and reflections of the color black.

From 1949 onwards, he exhibited in France, Germany and New York.

The first retrospectives of his work began in 1960. In 1979, a major exhibition was held at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
