Bernard BUFFET was a French painter and engraver born in Paris in 1928 and died in Tourtour (Var) in 1999.
Bernard Buffet began painting and drawing at the age of 10 and entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris at 15.
His style asserts itself from the outset, "using pencil and pen like a scalpel" in a expressionist and miserabilist style that characterize him.
Academician Maurice Druon, who dedicated a biography to him in 1964, described him as "a classic, the only important academic of our time, who has continued with a personal step the path traced by Ingres and Courbet". This tribute is a fitting tribute to the immense success of this painter, who is still represented in numerous museums in France and around the world.
His most sought-after period is 1945-1955.
A major retrospective was devoted to him in 2016 at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
